(Letter from a former residential client to a Brightside staff member 15 years
after client's discharge.)
Hello,
I know it has been a while, about 6 years, since the last time I spoke to
you, and much, much longer since I saw you, but I figured I would write to you
anyway. It took me this long to realize that there are some things that I never
did, or said for that matter. Like "Thank you". You were a pivotal part of my
life, and I never thanked you for everything you did for me. You put up with
a lot. I have friends with kids, and I am realizing how much you really put up
with. I personally have no kids, but am hoping to have some. And your "teachings"
are foremost in my mind.
Just to let you know, I am active duty in the Army Reserves...Things are
going rather well. I wish I could be at home with my friends, but you can't have
everything...I do have a girlfriend, though I have never been engaged...I haven't
decided if I am the marrying kind or not, but that is another story.
How are you? It is hard to believe that so much time has gone by. Sometimes
it feels like it was just recently that we returned from one of our trips...All
the things that were so much fun...But things must grow...Sometimes, I sit back
and think on some of those talks we used to have. I miss those days. But as
you told me, "Everything changes, and life goes on."
Thank you.
SGT J. B.
(J.'s letter was written several years ago, and he periodically keeps in touch.
He decided he is the marrying kind, and at last contact was the father of two
children.)
